Creative Placemaking
Healthy communities make healthy people. Artists and arts organizations can be instrumental in solving real world problems and valuing our places, in ways that that impact social, cultural and environmental quality of life. Following are initiatives at Los Angeles County Civic Art in various stages of implementation. More information available upon request.
CIVIC ART ENGAGEMENT MODELING
Training module (available upon request) created in 2014 for Americans for the Arts, includes segments on planning, audiences, samples and how to use a decision making matrix. Engagement is core to successful civic art at Los Angeles County Arts Commission. Whether conducted before design or long after an artwork has been in a neighborhood, engagement creates meaningful touchstones for the community with their art, with the place they live and with each other.
"PIECES TOGETHER" SCULPTURE INFORMED BY ENGAGEMENT
CLICK FOR MORE INFO
To create the entry sculpture for the new Martin Luther King Jr. Medical Camps in South LA, artist Lawrence Argent understood the importance of reflecting the local community. The spark for the artwork's design came from parallels he saw between puzzle pieces and community voices. To hear these voices first hand Argent interview community members and collected three dimensional data scans of each individual. He incorporated their likenesses into the artwork. And as a companion piece, Argent developed a website where the personal stories and scans can be viewed.
